Shahib (34) is a performance artist, who came from Somalia to the Netherlands with his family when he was 9. For 20 years he had to live without documents.
In the documentary „Paper Land“ he tells his story through emotions and performance. Although he has lived in the Netherlands for a long time, he often gets complimented on his Dutch. Just because he doesn’t look like he is living there.
We wanted to find out how weird it is for Germans, to get complimented on a good German knowledge.
“Your German is great!”
The fact that he lived without documents for many years caused Shabib many difficulties. Ones that many people won’t understand.
“You are on vacation and cannot find your documents.”
