„Why do we keep the things that we keep?“

An entire apartment full of personal belongings: the bookshelf is overflowing, and books are piled high on the nightstand as well. Yet no one lives here anymore.

At the center of Paul Dallas’ short film *Division* is a man named RC, who is forced by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to leave his apartment and the country within a few days. He leaves his personal belongings behind. A few days later, Paul Dallas, a friend of RC’s, clears out his abandoned apartment. Meanwhile, the two talk on the phone and decide together which items should be sent to him.

RC’s books are particularly important to him. During the phone call, RC decides which books and items he wants to keep and which things he must part with forever.

Who exactly is RC, the man on the other end of the phone, and what motivated Paul Dallas to tell this particular story? The director answers these and other questions in our interview.
