“We were glad that someone was talking to us”

“Weißer Rauch über Schwarze Pumpe,” the documentary film by Martin Gressmann and Peter Badel, follows the small town of Schwarze Pumpe in Saxony. Using video footage from the 1990s combined with images from today, this film provides an authentic picture of this place, which is representative of many places in the area of Lusatia. Short interview sequences portray the people who have not left their small town since the GDR era, even though they are witnessing the structural change in Lusatia right on their doorstep. To learn more about his film and the people in “Weißer Rauch über Schwarze Pumpe,” we had the opportunity to interview Martin Gressmann.
